The Atlanta Falcons beat the the Green Bay Packers on Sunday 44-21 to send the team to Super Bowl LI as they will face the New England Patriots for the ultimate prize.

So why are we mentioning this on a Delaware website? Well there is a local connection and that is Falcons Linebacker Paul Worrilow played on the University of Delaware’s football team.

Worrilow is the fourth Blue Hen player in last five seasons of the NFL to make it to the Super Bowl.

The linebacker will also be the ninth Hen to be on a Super Bowl team joining  defensive back Ivory Sully (Los Angeles Rams), quarterback Rich Gannon (Oakland Raiders), wide receiver Jamin Elliott (New England Patriots), tight end Ben Patrick (Arizona Cardinals), quarterback Joe Flacco (Baltimore Ravens), center Gino Gradkowski (Baltimore Ravens), safety Mike Adams (Denver Broncos), and cornerback Marcus Burley (Seattle).

Delaware had seven active players in the NFL this season which tied them for most among NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision schools. Other then Worrilow there was Safety Mike Adams (Colts), DL Zach Kerr (Colts), Joe Flacco ( Ravens), TE Nick Boyle ( Ravens) , OL Gino Gradkowski (Panthers) and DB Marcus Burley (Browns).

Worrilow started his football career at Concord High school where he was an All State player. Even though he was an All State player in high school, Worrilow was a walk-on with University Of Delaware. The linebacker might of been a walk on but he did not play like one, Worrilow was a four-year starter, a three-year All-Colonial Athletic Association selection, a two-time team captain, and a 2012 All-American. In 21014, Worrilow was awarded the John J. Brady Delaware Athlete of the Year presented by the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association.

The Wilmington,Delaware native ranks fifth all-time on Delaware’s tackles list with 377 tackles and the All-American helped lead the Hens to the NCAA FCS national championship game in 2010.

Worrilow signed with the Falcons in 2013 after going undrafted, in his first season he started 12 games ( played in all 16), collected 127 total tackles and 2 sacks. In 2016 season, the Falcons middle linebacker started 1 game ( played in 12), collected 21 total tackles and 2 pass deflections.  For his career, Worrilow has 385 total tackles, 4 sacks, 10 pass deflections, 2 Interceptions and 3 forced fumbles.
